4.5 starsWhat’s Done in Darkness is an absorbing mystery that takes place in a small town in Arkansas. The story focuses on Sarah and her childhood growing up in a very religious household where she’s expected to marry and be a dutiful housewife at age 18. Because of her upbringing, she was neglected of having a normal teenage experience. This book is quite bleak and her eventual kidnapping affects her from ever living a fulfilling life. She’s affected by both her childhood trauma and the trauma of being kidnapped.There is a mystery element to this story surrounding who kidnapped Sarah and other girls in a similar situation to her. Who is behind the kidnapping won’t be surprising but this is a mystery that drips in mood and atmosphere rather than twists and thrills. Laura McHugh illustrates just how hypocritical, constricting, and depraved these super religious societies can be. I was engrossed throughout this short read and it really affected me despite me not having any similarities to Sarah and her upbringing. This is definitely worth the read if you like moody mysteries that will leave you thinking about it long after reading it.
